John Lewis joined Flagstar in October 2012 as non-executive chairman of the boards of Flagstar Bancorp and Flagstar Bank.


From 2006 to 2015, he served as managing director of the investment banking firm of Donnelly Penman & Partners. He joined Donnelly Penman from Comerica Bank, where he had a 36-year career, ultimately serving as vice chairman and director of Comerica Incorporated and Comerica Bank and a member of the management policy committee and management council. Also at Comerica, he was responsible for the Individual and Investment Bank divisions, as well as the development and administration of the banking activities related to Comerica’s expansion into California, Texas, and Florida.


He is active in leadership positions in many civic and community organizations, including serving as chairman of the boards of the University of Detroit Mercy and Beaumont Health System, and vice chairman of the board of the Detroit Institute of Arts. He is a trustee of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, and past chairman of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council and New Detroit, Inc. He also serves on the board of directors of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival of America.
