The key is customer service.

Inspiration comes from everywhere—even dairy farms. In fact, the first-hand experience and knowledge that Joe Lathrop gained while growing up on his parent’s farm in Stockbridge, MI influenced him to go into banking.

“I began to understand the financial needs of farmers,” said Lathrop, who cut his teeth in the industry working for Farmer’s Home and Farm Credit Services of America. In 1999, he became the Director of Warehouse Lending at Flagstar Bank.

Lathrop believes that the customer service is the key for lasting client relationships. “It’s important that our client’s reputation is on the line—as well as ours—when we fund their loans. By being accurate and timely, we create happy customers that maintain long working relationships with us. Even though we work with over 260 mortgage companies, we make sure that their money is on the table with them on time.”

One benefit of being a Flagstar warehouse customer is having direct contact with a dedicated lender and processor. No one waits on a phone queue. “I’m passionate about the people who work for me, and the people we serve. I want our customers to know what we’re committed to doing the best job we can for them,” he said.

Outside of the office, Lathrop sits on the boards of Compassionate Ministries of Jackson County and the John George Home.
