Outreach & Volunteerism
Catalyzing positive change in our communities.
Volunteer hours
In 2021, Flagstar employees volunteered 5,726 hours with 303 different organizations.
For a second year, COVID-19 led to the cancellation of volunteer events, but that didn’t stop Flagstar employees. They quickly pivoted to virtual volunteerism, including online homebuyer education and financial literacy workshops. When possible, we continued volunteering in person to help distribute food or clean up local areas.
Board placement
Flagstar employees at all levels serve on scores of nonprofit boards. We are honored that they serve our communities in this way, and we pledge to facilitate, nurture, and increase these connections.
“I have a newfound respect and admiration for the nonprofits whose purpose is to help others. At Flagstar, we help others achieve homeownership, among many other services. However, this is different. The services provided by Centro Multicultural La Familia impact people in a completely different way by bringing awareness and support to those in need.”
- Carolyn Kohls, SVP and Director, Quality Control and Appraisal Management, Centro Multicultural La Familia board member
“It all comes back to Admiral Bill McRaven’s 2014 commencement speech at the University of Texas at Austin. If we meet 10,000 people in our lifetime, and if everyone at Flagstar can make a difference in the lives of just 10 of those people, and those 10 make a difference in the lives of 10 people, then in five generations (125 years), we will have changed the lives of the current U.S. population. One more generation, and we would have changed the lives of nearly everyone on the planet. If everyone lives a life filled with respect and service to others, the world will become a better place.”
- Philip Kotwick, Senior Development Manager, IT, Soldiers’ Angels advisory board member
“Allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone, think outside the box, and make sure the organization is something you truly believe in. Also, have fun with it and be yourself. The rewards far outweigh the time and commitment.”
- Angelo Rea, Senior Credit Officer, Credit Risk Administration, Detroit Regional LGBT Chamber of Commerce board member
